How To Celebrate Moon Festival

[ UPDATE ] The Province of Alberta and Alberta Health Services announced new COVID-19 restrictions on September 15, 2021, affecting a variety of public and private gatherings. It has been determined that the Chinatown Lantern Festival is classified as a ‘public event – outdoor’ with restrictions for 2m or 6 ft social distancing. While it is possible to install precautions for the festival event (eg. social distancing, masking, hand-sanitizing, crowd control, security, etc.) there are risks which are identified but unpredictable (eg. super-spreader incidence, public anti-masking/anti-vaccination protestors, public health protestors, etc.) which would put both the festival merchants, volunteers and organizers at risk along with the public. Consequently, it is with great regret that the Chinatown BIA has opted to cancel the Chinatown Lantern Festival event.

In 2021, the Mid-Autumn Festival falls on September 21st (Tuesday). Also well known as the Mid-Autumn Festival or Mooncake Festival, Moon Festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese traditional calendar, which usually falls on September or early October in the Gregorian calendar.

Join hundreds of people on September 18th, 2021 in Calgary Chinatown’s inaugural Lantern Festival organized by Calgary Chinatown Business Improvement Area (CBIA) to celebrate the occasion. This event is supported by City of Calgary Government, many community partners such as Diversecities and Calgary Chinese Elderly Citizens’ Association. The exact location of the event? Daqing Square in Chinatown.

Where is Daqing Square?

Daqing Square is a piazza on the west side of the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre in Calgary (197 – 1st Street S.W., Calgary). Daqing, known as the oil capital of China, became a twin city with Calgary in 1981.

A portion of 2nd Avenue S.E. and S.W. in Calgary Chinatown was renamed Daqing Avenue (although the majority of people don’t know about this fact and don’t call the street that way).

Calgary has six sisters or twins, around the world, 3 in Asia and 3 in North America.

This will be a welcoming event for all walks of life to join. We have learnt that the one-day event will feature local food trucks & food tents, cultural & merchant tents, live music, and a beautiful display of traditional lanterns.

According to the organizer, kids will have a chance to takeaway a lantern for free!
