Current FREE Parking Times in Calgary Chinatown
Parking in Calgary Chinatown is always FREE, given that it is on a Sunday, a Statutory Holiday such as Good Friday or Remembrance Day, Long Weekend Mondays, and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. on Mondays to Saturdays.
Complicated enough? Not quite. Frequent Chinatown patrons probably are well aware of this pain point: Parking in Chinatown and in Downtown in general is not the most affordable.
But, here is the good news:
Free 2-hr parking is available in Calgary Chinatown between September 2021 to Winter 2022.
Is It A Real Deal?
Sometimes, you gotta see to believe it. So, I took an experiment.
I met a friend for a lunch on Sept 20 in Chinatown. She chose street parking at CPA Zone 1403 for $7.50 per 1.5 hours while I parked at (of course) CPA Zone 9888 and it is absolutely nothing, zip, FREE!
About CPA Lot 888 (Zone 9888)
Zone 9888 has been around for many many years. It was a private parking lot (believed it was managed by Impark) until Calgary Parking Authority deployed its novel ParkPlus System in Calgary. After some community consultation, the lot was numbered 9888 based on the lucky number ‘8’ theme. In addition, it has a Koi Fish theme in the lot to follow through.
A New FREE Parking Initiative
Thanks to a new initiative offered by the City of Calgary, Calgary Parking Authority (CPA), and Chinatown Business Improvement Area (CBIA), visitors who come to Chinatown can have a luxury in time to enjoy what the district has to offer.
The FREE two-hour parking is available at this surface lot – Zone 9888 at 109 Riverfront Ave. S.E. when you register your licence plate at a ParkPlus pay machine. This temporary promotion is limited to one free parking session per vehicle, per day.
The City of Calgary thinks this promotion is crucial to support the Chinatown district via CBIA. This special offer can help sustain the vibrancy of Chinatown and Downtown.
“We’re committed to optimizing and improving the parking services we offer to Chinatown residents and visitors,” says CPA Acting General Manager Moe Houssaini. “And we’re excited to continue to support local businesses through this collaborative parking promotion at one of our prime downtown surface lots.”
What Is Chinatown Business Improvement Area or BIA?
Calgary Chinatown Business Improvement Area (CBIA) has been working diligently since its inception in 2017 to make Chinatown a must-visit destination. Whether you visit there for Dim Sum, Boba Bubble Tea, Hong Kong Style Cafe, Asian Pastry, Grocery or simply to have a walk, to bike, and to exercise, Chinatown is a great option.
“The provision of 2-hours free parking is a continuing effort by the BIA to make Chinatown a ‘must visit’ destination and a great visitor experience that is available, accessible and affordable for everyone to enjoy noon hour dim sum, evening family dinners, and weekend cultural experiences,” says CBIA Executive Director Terry Wong.
CBIA Chairperson Grace Su who is one of the key catalysts to improve that area thinks that the FREE parking initiative is a much-needed boost to help encourage patrons to spend more time enjoying all the amenities with a peace of mind.
